Course/session description: Tailored to the professional rescuer, the Emergency Medical Response course by the American Red Cross provides comprehensive training that gives the participant the knowledge and skills needed to perform lifesaving interventions on critical patients. The course provides the necessary tools for the rescuer to help sustain life, reduce pain, and minimize injury during out-of-hospital medical and traumatic emergencies—while awaiting or alongside higher-level personnel at the scene. This course fulfills the requirement for Acute Management of Athletic Injury and Illness Certification for the Board Certified Sports Specialist (http://www.abpts.org/Certification/Sports/) of the APTA.
Instructor Bios:
Laura A. Schmitt, PT, DPT, SCS, OCS, ATC Laura graduated from West Chester University in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education with a concentration in Athletic Training. She then received her Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Beaver College in 1991. She later completed her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Temple University in 2003. She has been at University of Delaware since 1997 and is Board Certified Specialist in both Orthopedics and Sports Physical Therapy. She has been a Certified Athletic Trainer since 1988. Laura’s professional development is related to the training of both Resident and Doctoral level students. She is an APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor and has completed the APTA Advanced Clinical Instructor training course. She has now gone on to become an APTA Credentialed Clinical Trainer. She currently serves as the Director of Clinical Education for the UD Doctor of Physical Therapy Program and lectures and serves as a teaching assistant throughout the DPT curriculum. She is currently the Sports Special Interest Group (SIG) chair. She has been an EMR instructor since 2002.
Tara Jo Manal PT, DPT, OCS, SCS, FAPTA Director of Clinical Services and Residency Training Physical Therapist Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopedics and Sports. Tara graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 1991. She went on to receive her Masters in Physical therapy at UD in 1993 then received her Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree from Temple University in 2006. She is board certified clinical specialist in the areas of orthopedic and sports physical therapy. Tara lectures nationally and internationally on topics related to physical therapy, residency training, reduction of variability of practice and her area of expertise in electrical stimulation, low back, knee injuries, and more. She teaches within UD’s Doctor of Physical Therapy curriculum in courses related to Spine Management, PT as a Profession, Rounds, and Emergency Response. She provides expert consultations in the clinic in her areas of specialty.
Airelle Giordano PT, DPT, OCS, SCS Associate Director of Clinical Services Physical Therapist Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopedics and Sports. Airelle graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Kent State University in 2001. She went on to receive her Masters in Physical Therapy from the University of Delaware in 2003 and then her Doctor of Physical Therapy from Temple University in 2007. She is a board certified clinical specialist in the areas of orthopedic and sports physical therapy. Airelle is an APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor. She lectures nationally and internationally on topics related to residency training, concussion management, ACL and knee rehabilitation, gymnastics, and more. Her professional development is in the area of training Physical Therapy Residents and Doctoral Students. She teaches in Emergency Response, Exercise Progression, and Rehabilitation throughout UD’s Doctor of Physical Therapy curriculum and she coordinates a Sports Elective class.
Anthony Carroll PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT Physical Therapist Center Assistant Professor of Clinical Practice Coordinator of Clinical Education Fellow of the American Academy of Manual Physical Therapists Board Certified Orthopedic Specialist Anthony graduated from the University of Delaware with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2007. He then pursued the University of Delaware Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency in 2011, specializing in orthopedic management of disorders of the spine, upper and lower extremities with a focus in the spine. In 2012, Anthony completed the Kaiser Permanente’s Manual Rehabilitation Fellowship program in Los Angeles, CA consisting of advanced training in both manual and movement sciences related to the treatment of spine, extremity pain, and chronic pain. Upon completion of his fellowship program, Anthony returned to the University of Delaware as a Physical Therapist, Residency mentor and Clinical Faculty in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. Anthony is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists, Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist, and Certified Clinical Instructor.
Grace Ademski PT, DPT, GCS, NCS Grace graduated from Towson University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science in 2004. She went on to receive her Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree from the University of Delaware in 2006. She is a board certified clinical specialist in the areas of neurologic and geriatric physical therapy and she completed the APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor as well as the Advanced Clinical Instructor course. Grace’s professional development has been in the area of vestibular therapy and concussion. She has been treating patients with complaints of dizziness since 2009. She teaches the vestibular component in UD’s Doctor of Physical Therapy curriculum.
Fred Breidenbach PT, DPT, SCS Fred received his bachelors’ degree in Exercise Science from West Chester University of Pennsylvania in 2014. He then went on to complete his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from University of Delaware in 2016 and was the Faculty Award recipient for his graduating class. Following his doctorate degree, he completed a 1 year sports residency program at the University of Delaware and became a Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Sports. He then gained additional clinical experience in the rehabilitation of throwing athletes, ranging from the youth to professional levels, before returning to the University of Delaware in 2019. Fred is an APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor and serves as a Clinical Instructor for the UDPT graduate students in the Sports and Orthopedic clinic.
Mike Eckrich PT, DPT, MS, SCS, CSCS Mike received a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science from Eastern University in 2015, a Masters of Science in Anatomy and Clinical Health Science from University of Delaware in 2016, and a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University Delaware in 2017. He completed a Sports Residency at the University of Delaware in January of 2019 and transitioned to full time clinical staff in February of 2019. He currently treats patients and is a clinical instructor for UDPT graduate students in the Sports and Orthopedic clinic. He is an APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.
Jerry Smith PT, DPT, OCS Jerry received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology in 2013 and his Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2016, both from Arcadia University. He completed his Orthopedic Residency at Temple University while participating at an outpatient sports and orthopedic clinic. He is recognized as a Board Certified Orthopedic Specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists. Jerry currently is a Physical Therapist and Assistant Professor of Practice at the University of Delaware. He treats patients in the UDPT sports and orthopedic clinic and teaches in the DPT curriculum.
