Change in Leadership: The Interdisciplinary Environmental Association Thanks to outgoing President and Council Members for their service during a difficult 2019-2021

The 26th International Interdisciplinary Conference on the Environment was marked by an address from Dr. Kalim Shah, who served as the Association’s President from 2019-2021 and organized the 25th IICE in San Juan, Puerto Rico in June of 2019. During his virtual speech, he reinforced the IEA’s purpose as an international, academic nonprofit that is committed to bringing together disciplines that surround and intersect with environmental studies to research, communicate, and educate environmental knowledge from an interdisciplinary approach. In his address, Shah highlighted the surge in youth interest in the IEA during his tenure and the almost doubling of IEA Honors Societies across North America. He noted. “even 26 years on, our watch is not yet over, current affairs dictate that now more than ever, the need for interdisciplinarity of “science for society” is unprecedented.”

Dr. Shah now serves as the Chair of Advisory Council for the Interdisciplinary Environmental Association and is a member of the IEA’s Executive Council where he advises the Association on current challenges, changes, and the future direction of the IEA. Shah also used his speech to announce Dr. Greg Cronin of the University of Colorado, Denver, as the IEA’s new president for the 2021-2023 term.

Following the change of presidential leadership, Dr. Greg Cronin wrote a statement to IEA’s community stating, “I want to focus on environmental justice by increasing membership and participation to people who have historically been oppressed, disenfranchised, and marginalized.” This year also marked a transition within IEA’s Council members and the Association welcomed Dr. Meenal Shrivastava from Athabasca University, Dr. Paola Massyel Garcia Meneses from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and Dr. Amy Erickson from Louisiana University, Shreveport to the Advisory board.
