This spring, PHC led collaborative efforts in Delaware to plan and coordinate National Public Health Week (NPHW) hosted by the American Public Health Association. During the week, we celebrated the power of prevention, advocated for healthy and fair policies, shared strategies for successful partnerships and championed the role of a strong public health system. Students, faculty/staff, and community partners collaboratively hosted 15 events and 25 hours of programming.
Evaluation results demonstrated that campus and community members were equally involved in these events, the effort increased awareness for NPHW among participants, the majority of respondents were likely to use information provided, 100% of respondents would like to see continued programming, and participation in the week’s events supported community members’ likeliness to engage with UD again in the future. Partners included the Delaware Public Health Association, Delaware Academy of Medicine, UD Department of Behavioral Health and Nutrition and UD Employee Health and Wellbeing (College of Health Sciences), the UD Cooperative Extension (College of Agriculture and Natural Resources), the Health Equity Club, Active Minds, the Collegiate Recovery Community, iMatter, Inc., and Delaware INBRE.

The UD Partnership for Healthy Communities hosted “Lecture and a Movie: Violence and Public Health” at Main Street Movies 5 in Newark. With a focus on violence as a public health issue, the event began with a showing of A Family Affair, a film that highlighted how trauma unfolds and can impact the health and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities. “Trauma isn’t something that is ‘out there’ happening to people we don’t know. It has an address and lives in our homes and communities. The community members who collaborated on this project did so to start a conversation and make it relatable so we all see the signs, get resources to our friends and family, and feel compelled to prevent it from happening in the first place” explains Shirelle “Diamond” Hogans, writer and director of the film.
