Tails ‘n Trails
Tails ‘n Trails had a fun educational year for 2016. Some of the activities we enjoyed were participating in the State Horse Bowl, then our club’s annual Ride n Tie (a race of fun, fitness and teamwork where two people share one horse. One starts astride the other on foot, changing at designated check points on country trails). We also enjoyed club field trips. Our first trip was to Hall of Fame Trainer Lynn Ashby’s Arabian race horse farm. She also invited us to come behind the scenes as you prep for a race, concluding with a tour of the backside at Delaware Park. The Townsend Fire department gave us a tour of their equipment and firetrucks and showed us life saving tips useful for horse related accidents, we even got a chance to use the fire hose. To finish off the year we rang bells for the Salvation Army at Boscov and visited Heavensent Miniature Horse Farm, learning all about training minis to show as halter and driving horses. As always, we strive to help others learn, connect and grow through our love of horses. We are encouraged and full of hope for 2017!
Clover Quest
Clover Quest 4-H club met on December 16 at 4:00 at the Newark Free Library. Most of the members and 7 visitors participated in the meeting. Club president Kyle Merritt thanked members for contributing to the Sunday Breakfast Mission toy drive and reminded them of the upcoming Family Promise service project. Ms. Blaky Wasgatt, the club leader, gave a short Family Promise training and encouraged members to enter in the Favorite Food Contest.
The club then had fun with some Christmas-themed games. The 5-11 age group wrapped a couple clubbers in streamers and bows to make Christmas trees and the teens tried to throw as many marshmallows as possible in each other’s mouths. Both groups played a “12 days of Christmas” mad libs and unwrapped several layers of wrapping from a gift. Kyle then served delicious Santa hats made of brownies, whipped cream, and strawberries. For the presentation, Ms. Blaky led the club in making chocolate covered pretzels and little Christmas trees made of ice cream cones, green frosting, and M’n’M’s.
This exciting Christmas meeting was adjourned at 5:30.
Service Project Opportunity
Last winter, UD Extension was able to give out several thousand children’s books to facilities and outreach programs in need. Unfortunately, that was a one time donation. The need for children’s books for lower income families never ends. Amazing Grace Outreach Ministries has reached out again to make a request for donations. If any of our clubs is looking for a service project, this would be a wonderfully rewarding one. Please contact Serena in the 4-H office at 302-831-8965 or serenac@udel.edu and she can put you in touch with the contact person.
