How Checking Accounts Work

A checking account is a bank account that allows you to deposit and withdraw money, and use checks, debit cards, or online banking to access your funds:
- Depositing money
- You can deposit money into your checking account from a variety of sources, including your paycheck, cash, or account transfers.
- Withdrawing money
- You can withdraw money from your checking account by writing checks, using a debit card, accessing an ATM, or making an electronic transfer.
- Using your money
- You can use your checking account to make purchases and payments, or to store your cash and other payments.
- Debit cards
- Funds for a purchase are taken directly from your checking account. Debit cards don’t charge interest and typically don’t have annual fees or late fees. However, if you use overdraft protection and spend more than you have in your account, you’ll be charged overdraft fees.
