Fixing it at the Café

Some engineers just have ‘the knack’, and can’t help but try to fix things. For this reason, the concept of a “Fix-It Café” was born, to help repair household items and encourage people to be more thrifty and familiar with tools in an age of materialism & two-day shipping.

The third Saturday of each month, volunteers and community members come to the red Bank Barn in Glasgow Park and get ready to fix it. Community members enjoy seeing their items come back to life, and volunteers enjoy seeing all of the ‘success stories’ where we made a difference in this outreach effort.

 

This effort is a partnership between the New Castle County Department of Community Service, Lowes of Bear, William Penn High School Construction Technology, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Student Chapter at the University of Delaware. Thank you to all who came out and helped, and also to everyone who thought to repair instead of replace. Hopefully we will see you there next time!

 

May The Fourth Awakened

This past Thursday, the University of Delaware did not go quietly into the night — the Force Awakened. Despite all of the obstacles placed in our path, all of those who came and stuck it through the end left feeling satisfied. Needless to say, the light up foam ‘lightsabers’ were a hit. Due to popular demand, the costume contest was replaced with a series of lightsaber duels. The 3D-printed models were awarded to the champions, and everyone left with lightsabers as consolation prizes.

I am sure of one thing — the audio visual (A/V) system in Kirkbride Hall has been corrupted by the dark side of the force. Plan A with overtures to borrow a Blu-Ray player were refused, Plan B with screening (legally) refused to work as iTunes would display the start menu but refused to play the movie. On top of that, Plan C petered out as the DVD player in the A/V cabinet crashed 45 minutes into the film. Attendance was lower than expected due to the primere of the new Guardians of the Galaxy film, and still only half of those in attendance weathered through the storm to finish the storm.

The 3D-printed prizes were as awesome as you might imagine. We got an AT-ST, Droideca, and Y-wing made for us courtesy of the Spencer Lab design studio makerspace.

E-Fest East Recap

This past Earth Day Weekend, a delegation of seven ASME UD students braved the seemingly never-ending rain in Tennessee to represent the University of Delaware at the 1st annual ASME Engineering Festival East! We drove hard through the night, and toiled even harder the next to get our Henbot in shape for the Robot Pentathlon Student Design Competition against 80 other registered teams from around the country.
