AHC Staff Mentoring Program

Objectives: The African Heritage Caucus pairs early to-mid career professionals with seasoned professionals. The goal is to encourage professional development and career growth for traditionally underrepresented University of Delaware employees.

Target Audience: Exempt and non-exempt employees of African descent and their allies.

APPLY TO BE A MENTOR

Mentor Guidelines:

  • Potential mentors must have at least 5 years’ experience.
  • Potential mentors must complete an application, which includes match criteria.
  • Commit to a one-year mentor/mentee appointment. Upon completion, opt to be matched with a new mentee or continue to formally mentor their mentee. (Mentors have the option to formally or informally continue their mentorship.)

Mentor Expectations:

  • Participate in required program components.
  • Develop a mentorship agreement that includes goals, expectations, and a communication plan.
  • Meet with mentee on a regular basis – at least once a month.
  • Provide guidance and support in mentee’s professional development and career growth.
  • Communicate on a regular basis to discuss career goals, challenges, opportunities, etc.

Mentee Guidelines: 

  • Potential mentees can apply with any years’ of experience.
  • Potential mentees must complete an application which includes match criteria.
  • Commit to a one-year mentor/mentee appointment. Upon completion, opt to be matched with a new mentor or continue the mentor/mentee partnership. (Mentees have the option to formally or informally continue their mentorship.)

  • Participate in required program components.

  • Meet with mentor on a regular basis – at least once a month.
  • Open to guidance and support for professional development and career growth.
  • Communicate on a regular basis to discuss career goals, challenges, opportunities, etc.

Program Components:

  • Orientation Lunch/Match Day: All paired matches will attend an orientation luncheon to learn more about mentor/mentee expectations on Friday, November 15, 12 p.m. at the Career Center.
  • Mentors/Mentee Meetings: Mentors and mentees are expected to meet at least once a month for at least one hour.
  • Mid-Year Check-in survey
  • End-of-year Celebtration
