Artstor has released a new version of its Offline Image Viewer (OIV). For Mac users, OIV 4.0 is compatible with OSX Mavericks (version 10.9), but it is not yet compatible with Apple’s newest operating system, OSX Yosemite (version 10.10). So if you use OIV, I would recommend waiting to upgrade your system to Yosemite until Artstor has addressed this known issue.

This is a problem that has happened before, and I can pretty much promise you that it will happen again the next time Apple moves to a new version of OSX. A new version of OIV that is compatible with Mac OSX Mountain Lion (version 10.8) is now available from ARTstor. To download it, you first need to log into your ARTstor account. In the navigation bar at the top of the main ARTstor search page, click on Tools and select “Download offline presentation tool (OIV).” After accepting the Terms and Conditions of Use, click the radio button next to “OIV 3.1.3 for Mac (Java 6.x; Mac OSX 10.7 and 10.8),” then download.
Users of Mac OSX Lion and ARTstor’s Offline Image Viewer (OIV) have been out of luck so far this semester (read my previous post here), but a solution finally appears to be on the horizon. ARTstor is currently testing a new version of OIV that will be compatible with Lion, and expects to release it within the next week.

This problem occurs with every application when a new operating system is first released. The same thing happened with OIV when Apple released OSX Snow Leopard (version 10.6), and ARTstor worked quickly to solve that problem. For the time being, you may want to delay that purchase of a new Mac, make arrangements to use an older Mac instead, or even switch temporarily to using Powerpoint for your presentations.
