ARTstor has released over 50,000 new images during the month of May, including:
ARTstor has announced that it will soon discontinue the use of Java in its Digital Library. This comes after security concerns over Java caused some subscriber institutions to drop support for Java, effectively preventing them from using ARTstor at all. While this has not occurred at UD, we have noticed some technical difficulties with Java recently.
We won’t know how much of a change this will mean for regular ARTstor users until we see it in action, but I suspect it will only require minor adjustments to our current habits. After the switch, downloads will arrive to you as zip files, a change which will likely affect PC users (who may have the added step of “unzipping” the files) somewhat more than Mac users.
The VRC staff will be here to help if you have any problems during the transition!

A new version of OIV that is compatible with Mac OSX Mountain Lion (version 10.8) is now available from ARTstor. To download it, you first need to log into your ARTstor account. In the navigation bar at the top of the main ARTstor search page, click on Tools and select “Download offline presentation tool (OIV).” After accepting the Terms and Conditions of Use, click the radio button next to “OIV 3.1.3 for Mac (Java 6.x; Mac OSX 10.7 and 10.8),” then download.
If you find that you are unable to download images from ARTstor, you may need to upgrade the version of Java that’s running on your computer. You can read ARTstor’s notice for more information on fixing this problem, or stop by the VRC and we can help you out!
Susan Davi and I will be offering an introductory workshop on ARTstor on Wednesday, November 7 (that’s the day after Election Day), from 2:00 to 3:30 pm in 116A Morris Library. We will offer tips and training on how to find and download images, create image groups, and use the Offline Image Viewer (OIV) for classroom presentations.
This year also will be the first to include a discussion of Shared Shelf, the new partnership between the University of Delaware and ARTstor to unite our digital image collections in one convenient and easy-to-use website.

Over 750 images from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation are now available in ARTstor. The collection will eventually include about 7,000 images, with works of art at the Foundation’s five museums (including the flagship museum in New York and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice), installation views of Guggenheim exhibitions, and architectural views of its world-famous museum buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright in Manhattan and by Frank Gehry in Bilbao, Spain. The strength of the Guggenheim’s collections is in modern art, so copyright restrictions prevent some works from being included in this release (perhaps most notably those of Picasso).

Users of Mac OSX Lion and ARTstor’s Offline Image Viewer (OIV) have been out of luck so far this semester (read my previous post here), but a solution finally appears to be on the horizon. ARTstor is currently testing a new version of OIV that will be compatible with Lion, and expects to release it within the next week.
