About Open Education
Open education is a worldwide movement focused on affordable access to education. It promotes the creation, remix, and redistribution of learning materials, such as videos, podcasts, music, articles, images, or textbooks, through the use of open licenses. Such learning objects are referred to as open educational resources, or OER.
The most popular type of licensing is called Creative Commons. If an OER is assigned a Creative Commons license, it can usually be used for training or education by anyone.
Open education is also about promoting the use of the internet and social media to open up the learning experience beyond the classroom walls, to make it more authentic, richer, and available to more people around the world.
Open education is often associated to the open source movement and open access publishing.
About This Site
In order to promote the creation, use, and reuse of open learning materials, IT Academic Technology Services manages this referatory (a site listing resources hosted elsewhere). Although we strongly encourage faculty and staff to submit their open materials to other referatories like MERLOT, Connexions, or OER Commons (see Finding OER for a more complete listing), we believe that a local presence might provide a smoother transition in the vast world of open education.
You are invited to submit your materials to this site, or ask any question to ATS.
