Zakir Hussain

Tabla virtuoso and composer Zakir Hussain returns to Washington, D.C., with the U.S. tour debut of his latest exploration of diverse cultures and sounds, Celtic Connections. Washington Performing Arts and GW Lisner co-present this fusion of the lively, flowing melodies and rhythms of Celtic music—represented by the bodhran (frame drum), violin, pipes, flutes and voice—with the tabla, bamboo flute, and Carnatic violin at GW Lisner Auditorium on Tuesday, March 17 at 8pm. Hussain’s performance is part of Washington Performing Arts’ season-long exploration Silk Road: Creative Intersections, a dynamic focus on sharing and learning across cultures, art forms, and disciplines. “Musicians are the same the world over,” Hussain said. “There’s no meter that hasn’t been played, no rhythm that hasn’t been composed. It’s the musicians’ own qualities that allow them to make music different – that’s what’s exciting about this project [Celtic Connections] to me. It’s fresh music sparked by the humanity of those involved.”
