Today we went to Museu do Amanhã and the museum of contemporary art. Rather then take cabs to get there, we used Rio’s public transportation including the metro, the ferry, and the new tram system. There weren’t many tourists, so we really got to see how the people of Rio get around.
The works of art and the exhibits were all very different. Museu do Amanhã – Museum of Tomorrow – was what really stuck out to us. Small exhibitions showed viewers the evolution of earth from creation to how we recognize it today. Although it left people feeling overwhelmed at the end finding we are in the era of the Anthropocene – the exhibits leave you with hope and the ability to recognize some of the problems that face the world.
Before getting on a ferry, one of our most favorite parts of the day was getting to see the mural done by Eduardo Kobra which won the world record for largest group mural. Seeing the sheer details from afar and then up close made it even more impressive.
Afterwards, we went across to a small town where we ate at a local fish market. Some bought fish from the market below for one of the restaurants to cook. None of the servers spoke any english which made it fun to find out what came to the table after we attempted to order. Later we headed to the Museum of Contemporary Art located in a saucer-shaped building to look around and pick two of our favorites to sketch. The collection was small and filled with many different styles of work – paintings, sculptures, and installations.
Overall the day was filled with immersing ourselves into real Rio culture and getting to see many different works of art throughout the city. From the many forms of public transportation, to the local fish market – it was interesting to see the different aspects of the large city.
