Creating a Sense of Place | 1/16/18

Today, we visited the Burle Marx Studio where Isabela, the director and daughter of Haruyoshi, gave us a tour and explained many of their designs. She pulled out sketch after sketch, showing us the intricate designs of gardens, parks, yards, and city sidewalks. The most poignant moments were when she showed us how certain spaces lacked any ecological use or human interaction. She then explained how their designs derive a sense of purpose and identity for the areas. In particular, we were intrigued by the design of a square that revamped an older design by including traditional patterns for the pavement and unique Brazilian plants.

We also visited a few gardens designed by Burle Marx. We spent time at a rooftop garden, which Burle Marx designed decades ago during a time when rooftop gardens weren’t necessarily “all the rage”. He was one of the first in Brazil and the world to develop this type of garden. Inside it, he integrated many organic shapes and contrast of color. He included water to create a soothing environment and offer a sense of place.

Burle Marx’s work and that of his collaborators offer a real sense of tradition that we all felt! But by keeping up with modern elements, each space they design gives us a purpose: whether it is to walk around, sit down, observe, or simply enjoy! Getting to meet those who knew him was a unique experience and we hope to see more of Burle Marx’s designs around Brazil.
