The FRUCTOSE Study

Purpose: To learn about the effects of high and low fructose on cardiovascular health and cognitive function

Background: Fructose is a major source of added sugar in the human diet. An unhealthy diet can lead to hypertension and poor cardiovascular health outcomes.

About the Study: The FRUCTOSE study was a 4-week intervention study for participants who were 65-80 years old and had not been diagnosed with hypertension, diabetes, or heart disease. Each participant was assigned to three diets – one week of low fructose, one week of high fructose, and two weeks of a control diet in random order. All food was provided to the participants throughout the course of the study. Weekly anthropometrics, fasting blood draw, urine collection, and blood pressure responses was assessed. Participants were compensated for their time.
