Excitable Fiber Networks/Gels

Thrust Area 3:  Excitable Polyelectric Fiber Networks/Gels: Toward Artificial Neurons

research thrust area 3

Our Goals

The major goal of this thrust is to design and develop polyelectrolyte gel constructs that exhibit key characteristics of living systems, namely excitability and motion.  The gels are anionic polyelectrolytes, specifically selected as bio-inspired mimics of the cellular cytoskeleton.

As a key outcome, new fundamental knowledge about polyelectrolyte gels is emerging from this thrust.

The research work of this thrust area has been completed.
