• Privacy First: Use social media privacy controls to limit who can see your posts and personal info, creating a safer online space.
  • Think Before Posting: Consider the consequences of your online activity and avoid sharing sensitive information that could compromise your safety.
  • Stay Skeptical: Be cautious of suspicious messages and links, and fact-check information before sharing. Trust your instincts and stay vigilant to protect yourself online

Most people have at least one social media account, if not many. Ensuring your safety on social media goes beyond simply having a strong password.

Social platforms have become an integral part of our lives, connecting us with friends, family, and the world at large. However, this connectivity comes with its own set of challenges, from privacy concerns to online threats. It’s essential to be knowledgeable about how to navigate the internet safely.

    Staying Safe

Social media has expanded at an unprecedented pace, especially now with the almost daily introduction of new platforms. A study from 2021 found 31% of respondents did not feel safe online and 50% did not feel private. While concerning, there are many best practices you can implement to protect yourself. These are just a few examples of ways you can stay safe on social media.

    Account Privacy

Most social media platforms offer privacy controls that dictate who can see your posts, photos, and personal information. These privacy controls can also protect your account from bots, scammers, or people trying to steal your identity.Take advantage of these settings to create a safe digital space. Keep your account exclusive and only allow invites from trusted people.

    Think Before You Share

Your posts, photos, and anything else you share create a digital trail. Before hitting that ‘Post’ button, ask yourself: Is this something I’m comfortable sharing with the world? Your posts can share information, like your location, to your followers. Being mindful of what you post ensures that your digital persona aligns with your real-life values. Fraudsters often scan social media for answers to authentication questions like favorite color or high school mascot. It’s important to know that what you post can inadvertently reveal sensitive information, so think twice before sharing. Remember, once it’s out there, it’s out there.

    Stay Skeptical

With social media allowing anyone to share information it can be hard to know what’s real and what’s not. Be cautious of unsolicited messages, questionable links, and requests for personal information. It is also important to fact check information to make sure what you’re consuming is accurate. If something doesn’t seem right, trust your instincts and investigate. Awareness is your best defense.

Navigating the social media world can be tricky, but safety is key. By setting boundaries with privacy settings, thinking before sharing and staying skeptical you’re taking the right steps in order to keep yourself safe.
