Identifying Grasses by Their Seedhead

Mark VanGessel, Extension Weed Specialist; mjv@udel.edu

Identifying grasses is difficult, but now that they are heading out, it is easier (maybe not easy, but easier). Knowing which grasses are going to seed will help in determining the best approach for next year. For instance, management for giant foxtail and large crabgrass might be very similar, but that is not the best approach for fall panicum. Using the free app “Picture This” is an app I use often and find it to be very accurate, particularly with larger plants, flowers, and seedheads. Also, I have video that walks through the steps of identifying grass seedheads. The video can be found at https://youtu.be/oZKXSCO0Dww. Taking note of what species were not effectively controlled with your weed management program is the first step to improve for next season.
