Congratulations to Chris Cawley for correctly identifying last week’s pest challenge as beet armyworm. We have been seeing increasing beet armyworm activity, particularly in pheromone traps in the western Laurel area. I found adults and egg masses on pigweed west of Delmar this week. Just because they like pigweed and beets doesn’t mean they stay there! It’s important to recognize them because they are resistant to pyrethroid insecticides. They have a small black spot on the side of their body close to the head.
