Bright Spot Farm – Farm Assistant Position

SEASONAL FARM ASSISTANT

COMPANY DESCRIPTION:
Bright Spot Farm currently provides meaningful hands-on work, experience and training to high school
students from New Castle County, Delaware. Bright Spot operates a working farm and nursery/garden
center through which it trains youth and sells seasonal ornamental plants, vegetable and herb starts,
and fresh vegetables to the community. Our objective is to provide a space for healing and
empowerment in which the young people in our program can feel confident in stewarding the land while
deepening their appreciation for nature. We root our young growers further into their communities
through service while providing them with the tools they need for success.

Bright Spot has recently expanded to 5 acres in order to focus more on the increasing need for fresh
foods. Yearly, we distribute approximately 70% of our harvests to food insecure families in New Castle
County through multiple outlets. We are currently seeking one Seasonal Farm Assistant to aid us in
continuing this work and carrying out an abundant season.

The Seasonal Farm Assistant will report to the Program Director and will assist with all farm tasks
related to food production and distribution. The ideal candidate for this position has an interest in
small-scale vegetable production, food systems, food-insecurity, and community outreach. This is a
seasonal position that begins in May and ends in October.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Assisting Farm Manager & Program Director in all aspects on the farm including but not limited to:

● General field work (transplanting, weeding, harvesting, etc.)
● Greenhouse seeding
● Preparing & Packing produce for distribution
● Rotating schedule at farmer’s markets
● Working with youth enrolled in our Young Farmers program

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & ABILITIES:

● Willingness to work outdoors in most weather conditions, with a variety of tools
● Ability to work independently or as part of a team
● Strong and positive communication skills
● Committed interest in growing food, soil health and land stewardship
● Willingness to work a flexible schedule
● Reliable transportation or ability to commute to the farm
● Ability to repeatedly lift 40+ lbs

COMPENSATION:
$15/HOUR, 20-25 hours/week, May- October

Prior experience is preferred but not required. Must pass a State of Delaware background check.
