Entomology Lab Internship
The ornamentals IPM entomology lab has an internship available for 2023 summer. The intern will assist the extension specialist on a variety of projects which include: identifying insects collected during a project investigating impacts of mosquito control on non-target arthropods, management of spotted lanternflies and redheaded flea beetles and maintaining demonstration gardens for the management of various insect borer species on maples and ashes. Aspects of these projects include: insecticide efficacy evaluations, studies related to redheaded flea beetle biology, potentially spotted lanternfly insecticide evaluations and collections, work with reduced-risk or biopesticides targeting the management of spider mites, thrips and armored scale , use of entomopathogenic nematodes and fungi (biological control using inset pathology), choice trials and bioassay tests looking at arthropod behavior, demonstration plot management and plant installation, greenhouse plant maintenance and propagation, geocaching with insects and diseases, prepare a presentation for speaking to green industry professionals, and assisting with fact sheets. Interns may also participate in site inspections with DDA nursery inspectors, this activity scouts nurseries for relevant pests.
Requirements: Personal transportation available and will have opportunities to interact with professionals working in entomology on multiple occasions.
