Star® Roses and Plants is seeking a summer intern to work with the Breeding department.
Overview of the role: You will collaborate with the entire Breeding team, including the Breeders and Breeding Technicians, to support the department’s research initiatives. You will be exposed to the product development lifecycle and gain professional experience by engaging with different departments throughout the organization.
Who you will report to: Breeder
Schedule: 7:30am – 4pm, M – F (start either May or June and complete in August)
Pay: $15.00/hour
What you will be doing:
- Conduct experiments on plant breeding of perennial and woody landscape plans. Propagate and grow plants in the field, greenhouses, and growth chambers.
- Opportunity to work side by side with not only the plant breeders but with the new product development team and the production team.
- Work outside and in the greenhouse doing some of the following tasks:
- In-ground planting
- Propagating
- Transplanting
- Irrigating
- Fertilizing, weeding, and pruning
- Labeling plants
- Sampling plants
- Harvesting
- Packing seed
- Pollinating
- There will be some computer work that includes taking and entering plant data.
- Opportunity to run small equipment

What are the requirements?
- Preferably working towards on of the following degrees: Plant Science, Horticulture, or related degree.
- Strong interest in plant development.
- Basic plant identification and horticulture skills preferred.
- Highly detail oriented and organized.
- Able to work outdoors, in the greenhouse, and indoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to take directions and work independently to complete a task.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must be committed to completing working internship in order for us to sign off on any internship paperwork.
Physical Requirements:
This position will require lifting, pushing, and pulling items up to 50lbs. Must be able to walk fields and work outside under the sun and in other types of weather conditions. This position will require the intern to use horticulture tools and small equipment.
