Horticulturist Position at Millbourne

Started in the mid-1980’s on a turn of the century property in York, Pennsylvania, Millbourne is the culmination of a love for English inspired gardens. With 15 acres of cultivated gardens on a 50-acre estate, Millbourne encompasses 10 different gardens, various plant collections, and beautiful stone structures set among exuberant plantings. While currently a private estate, Millbourne is preparing to transition to a public garden. Millbourne invites all qualified horticulturist to apply to be a part of the team making this exciting transition.

The horticulturist position involves the maintenance of an assigned area within the garden as well as assisting with the general maintenance of the overall garden. The ideal candidate will be able to creatively use and be knowledgeable in the cultivation of herbaceous and woody plants using best horticultural practices. A critical eye and attention to detail is a requirement for this position.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Maintain assigned area to the highest level of horticultural excellence
  2. Perform gardening and landscaping duties including, but not limited to, proper planting techniques, transplanting, proper soil preparation and maintenance, watering, fertilizing, deadheading, proper pruning techniques, hedge shearing, weeding, edging, mulching, identification of insect and disease, implementation of IPM, pesticide application, raking, digging, and mowing
  3. Design and maintain containers plantings
  4. Assist with the design and implementation of ornamental gardens
  5. Supervise assistant horticulturist
  6. Help with larger team projects
  7. Fall cleanup and snow removal
  8. Safely use small and large power equipment
  9. Lead garden tours and assist with garden related events
  10. Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  1. Minimum of an associate degree in horticulture or certificate in horticulture from a recognized program
  2. Minimum of 2 years horticulture work experience involving maintenance of ornamental gardens
  3. Knowledge of horticultural practices, proper pruning techniques, and the identification and cultivation of herbaceous and woody plants
  4. Experience using large and small power equipment as well as garden related hand tools

Job Requirements

  1. Maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record
  2. Possess and maintain a PA pesticide license or ability to obtain one within 90 days of employment
  3. Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  4. Comfortable working from a ladder
  5. Able to walk, stand, bend, and kneel for extended periods of time
  6. Able to use small and large power equipment as well as typical garden related hand tools
  7. Required to work outside in all types of weather conditions
