Millbourne is the former home and garden of the late Mr. and Mrs. Louis J. Appell, Jr. Inspired by the Appell’s love for English gardens, Millbourne has 13 acres of cultivated gardens on 50 acres. The property encompasses 10 different gardens, various plant collections and beautiful stone structures set among exuberant plantings. While currently open to private tours, Millbourne is preparing to transition to a public garden in the next several years. Millbourne invites all qualified horticulturists to apply to be part of the team making this exciting transition.
The horticulturist position involves the maintenance of an assigned area within the garden as well as assisting with the general maintenance of the overall garden. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable in the cultivation of herbaceous and woody plants using the best horticultural practices. A critical eye and attention to detail is a requirement for this position.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain assigned area to the highest level of horticultural excellence
- Perform gardening and landscaping duties including, but not limited to, proper planting techniques, transplanting, proper soil preparation and maintenance, watering, fertilizing, deadheading, proper pruning techniques, hedge shearing, weeding, edging, mulching, identification of insect and disease, implementation of IPM, pesticide application, raking, digging, and mowing
- Design and maintain containers plantings
- Assist with the design and installation of ornamental gardens
- Work with assistant horticulturist
- Help with larger team projects
- Fall cleanup and snow removal
- Safely use small and large power equipment
- Lead garden tours and assist with garden related events
- Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
- A passion and interest in plants and horticulture along with the desire to continue learning
- A degree, training or certificate in horticulture or related field is preferred
- Experience maintaining ornamental gardens
- Knowledgeable in best horticultural practices, proper pruning techniques, and the identification and cultivation of herbaceous and woody plants
- Experience using power equipment is preferred
Job Requirements
- Maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record
- Possess and maintain a PA pesticide license or ability to obtain one within 90 days of employment
- Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Comfortable working from a ladder
- Able to walk, stand, bend, and kneel for extended periods of time
- Able to use small and large power equipment as well as typical garden related hand tools
- Required to work outside in all types of weather conditions
This is a full-time, non-exempt position. The starting pay range is $20 – $22/ hour.
