Geographic Information System Intern

Summer Intern opportunity that can turn into a longer-term internship. Paid through a temp agency. Trial period applies. 

The main task of this job is to assist with the City of Wilmington’s lead service line inventory.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Data collecting, editing, computerized mapping and sharing work primarily focusing on the water system, esp. the lead service inventory. • Responsible for maintaining, upgrading, and utilizing the GIS data and computerized mapping associated with the City’s Department of Public Works according to specifications and quality control standards. • Provide staff support and conducts research in retrieving information from various GIS related files and relational databases. • Creates and manages metadata for data and projects. Perform data entry, digitization and data manipulation. • Participate in the design, development and creation of databases, maps, and other projects. • Provide GIS technical support in the development, presentation and maintenance of geographic data applications. • May keep basic records and prepare simple accurate reports. • Provides field help for mobile applications. • Conducts GPS work. • Assists with minor hardware and software problems. • Performs all related work as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS • Attending an accredited college or university, preferably with a degree in Engineering, Geography, or related area, with relevant experience with GIS (Geographic Information System) and utility mapping, or any equivalent combination of engineering and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. • Ability to work effectively and complete job functions accurately under supervision. • Considerable knowledge in the use of ESRI ArcGIS software. • Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) experience helpful. • Ability to establish and maintain good and effective relationships with the public, as well as other City employees. • Ability to use GPS unit. • Field experience a plus. • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, etc.).

WORKING CONDITIONS Normal Office Environment. Less than 15 percent of field work for data collection. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, use hands to operate, and reach with arms. Employee must occasionally lift up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities are required by this job, including close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
