The University of Delaware has introduced CrowdStrike Falcon, a cutting-edge Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) solution, to enhance cybersecurity protections for university-owned laptops and desktops. This initiative is managed collaboratively by IT professionals within individual units and UD Information Technologies (UDIT), aiming to ensure a robust and secure computing environment across the institution. CrowdStrike Falcon is designed to prevent many cyber threats, including malware, ransomware, and other malicious activities. By monitoring processes and system events, the software identifies suspicious behavior and takes preventive measures to safeguard devices. Additionally, it provides an added layer of protection through encrypted data collection for analysis, which helps detect and mitigate potential risks efficiently.

Privacy and Data Collection

UD prioritizes privacy and security when using CrowdStrike Falcon. While the software records details such as the computer name, logged-in user, and file names of accessed documents, it does not access or analyze the contents of those documents, emails, or personal communications. These safeguards ensure that the software is used solely to protect against cybersecurity threats in compliance with university policies.

Compliance and Device Requirements

The deployment of CrowdStrike Falcon is part of the university’s broader efforts to meet cybersecurity insurance requirements and minimize potential risks. Enhanced endpoint protection is required on all UD-owned endpoints and servers, including those purchased with grant or departmental funds. Even self-managed devices must have the software installed to comply with university policy. Devices running unsupported operating systems, such as older versions of macOS and Windows, are ineligible for installation. Personal devices are also not recommended for official university business. Employees should contact their unit’s IT professional for questions about device compliance or acquiring a university-approved device.

Support and Assistance

The CrowdStrike Falcon service is designed to operate seamlessly without impacting device performance. If issues arise or a legitimate file or site is mistakenly flagged, users are encouraged to reach out for support. Unit IT professionals are available to assist with troubleshooting, and further guidance can be obtained by emailing askit@udel.edu.
