Recognized species

This genus has 10 species, only one of which is found north of Mexico (and the placement of that species is in doubt). [see Metcalf 1947: 65]

Calyptoproctus aridus Stål, 1869: 88 – “South America”
Calyptoproctus coloratus Distant, 1906: 196 – Ecuador

Crepusia glauca Metcalf, 1923: 173; syn. by Ball 1933b: 145 (error?).
Alphina glauca auctt. (“auctorum”, i.e., in the sense of subsequent authors)
Calyptoproctus stigma (Fabricius, 1803)- Brazil, Guatemala
= Lystra stigma Fabricius, 1803: 58.
= Calyptoproctus stigma (Fabricius, 1803), comb. by Stål 1869: 87.

Calyptoproctus weyrauchi Lallemand, 1956 – Peru, French Guiana

Note: Because the type specimen of Alphina glauca (Metcalf, 1923), is misplaced, it is not possible to determine whether this species is the same as Calyptoproctus marmoratus Spinola, 1839 (see note at Alphina).  This problem is the subject of an ongoing study.  Eastern specimens are interpreted as beingC alyptoproctus marmoratus.

Economic Importance

Limited.

Plant associations

None reported (but possibly on trunks of deciduous trees).

Host from Wilson et al. (1994); plant names from USDA PLANTS or Tropicos.

Recognition

Calyptoproctus marmoratus can be recognized from other North American forms by head not strongly produced, head with eyes narrower than pronotum; transverse carina at the posterior margin of pronotum; sides of frons not parallel, widened in distinct lobe just above clypeal suture; ninth abdominal tergite of female elongate, medially carinate, usually hiding tenth and eleventh; forewings almost translucent, mottled with dark and clear areas.  The distinctions between Calyptoproctus marmoratus and Alphina glauca are not entirely clear.

Collecting

“Calyptoproctus marmoratus” comes to lights.  It may be possible to find this genus on the trunks of trees. Calyptoproctus in the Neotropics come readily to lights, but I have seldom collected this genus in other circumstances.

Molecular resources

Genbank has several genes for Calyptoproctus sp.; Barcode of life has data for C. marmoratus and C. elegans.
