Classification of the Ricaniidae

The Ricaniidae were given family-level status by Amyot & Serville (1843: 527 as Ricanides).   Melichar (1923) provided the first substantive classification, dividing the Nogodini from the Ricaniini and providing a key to genus.  The nogodinids were subsequently recognized as a family by (Muir, 1930). Metcalf (1955) noted the biogeography of the family known at the time: all but 2 species are from the Eastern Hemisphere; 24 species in two or more zoogeographic regions; the remainder as follows : 15 from the Palearctic Region, 107 from the Ethiopian Region, 32 from the Oriental Region, 68 from the Malaysian Region, 41 from the Austromalayan Region, 25 from the Australian Region, and 38 from the Oceanic Region.  Metcalf (1955) provided no higher groupings within Ricaniidae (no subfamilies or tribes).

The only higher grouping within Ricaniidae that has been proposed is that of the subfamily Pharsalinae Gnezdilov (2009) for  the genera Silvanana and Pharsalus , with the remainder in Ricaniinae by implication.  Stroinski et al. (2011) (or here) describe a series of remarkable brachypterous taxa from southern Africa.
