A Message from Our Director
Welcome to the Delaware Center for Cognitive Aging Research.
Over 6 million Americans are affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, including more than 19,000 Delawareans. 1 in 10 adults over the age of 45 already report difficulties with their memory or thinking, and growing concerns about dementia have increased public demand for better strategies to slow or stop this devastating disease. Fortunately, new research suggests that dementia can be significantly delayed in up to 40% of cases by addressing several modifiable risk factors like high blood pressure and physical inactivity. Advances in technology have improved our ability for early detection of the disease and new treatment strategies have emerged to help older adults compensate for cognitive difficulties.
Alzheimer’s is a complex disease that requires an interdisciplinary research approach to understand its causes and mechanisms to inform diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. Our affiliated faculty includes expertise in chemistry and biochemistry, biological sciences, physiology, translational neuroimaging, clinical neuropsychology and speech-language pathology, nursing, and physical therapy. Our mission is to drive interdisciplinary research, clinical education, and community engagement related to Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders (ADRD). We lead and support cutting-edge research that will ultimately slow, stop, or reverse ADRD and improve quality of life for older adults.
We hope that you will join us in this fight.
Sincerely,
Christopher R. Martens, Ph.D.
Director, Delaware Center for Cognitive Aging Research
