Submitted by Arielle Thompson on the 2020 spring semester study abroad program in Granada, Spain…
It has been another exciting and eventful week in Granada. The week started off with an unexpected bang. I attended an Intercambio at a cafe called Lemon Rock Cafe and got to talk to people from all different parts of the world. At my table, I spoke to a man native to Spain, a man from the Czech Republic, and some other fellow Americans. In order to help each other learn, we switched between English and Spanish while speaking. I will admit it was a tad intimidating since everyone’s English seemed much better compared to my level of Spanish, but the challenge was fun and meeting new people made it all worth it. We were able to teach each other a new word.
Towards the end of the week, I was able to experience yet another part of Spain, Cordoba. The first stop was to see the beautiful ruins of Medina Azahara. Although the city only lasted 80 years, I could still tell that it had been beautiful even though it was now reduced to ruins. When we arrived to the more central part of the city, we were able to break for lunch and explore the city before our next tour. I indulged in some wonderful gelato during this time. The tour of the Mezquita was very interesting as well. It was freezing inside due to the marble columns and floors. After an eventful Friday, I was happy to have seen more of Spain and also happy to be on our way back to Granada for some much needed rest. I look forward to our last week of intensive courses so that I can begin my UD classes and meet even more new people.
