Hawaii: Volcano National Park

Submitted by Jillian Mullane on the 2019 winter session study abroad program in Hawaii sponsored by the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences and the School of Education…

For our last week in Hawaii, we went to Volcano National Park.  This national park has been drastically changed in the last few months because of the eruption last spring.  Our park ranger, Dean, was able to bring us through the park and point out the endemic plants that the park houses.  He also told us about how Hawaii has one of the most extinct animals populations in the world.  We also learned that these Volcanoes were the birthplace of the Hawaiian islands. This park really encapsulates the Hawaiian spirit and how in touch they are with nature.
