Germany: Discovering My Likes And Dislikes

Submitted by Alexis Chilton on the 2019 winter session study abroad program in Heidelberg, Germany sponsored by the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology…

For the last week of study abroad in Germany, I didn’t experience anything new to Germany. A few concepts that I am still surprised by is the fact that you have to pay to use public bathrooms, but they are kept clean on the daily basis by a machine, or a person. Also, espresso is made more than filtered coffee, which is odd because it is a lot easier to filter coffee than make an espresso drink. But, of course, the espresso is more expensive, so customers do not have a choice to spend less money at most cafes. Also, a majority of the cafes are also bars at night, which I found to be odd, but they are open for longer hours so therefore, they probably have a higher revenue. Overall, this program was an eye-opening experience, and because of it, I had a higher desire to come back home to the United States. It was a great opportunity though to be able to discover my likes and dislikes of a portion of Europe. I am truly grateful for this opportunity I was given, and I am blessed for all the memories that came with it. Thank you!

Below is a picture from Cafe Moro in Heidelberg as an example of the small portion of food most cafes provide, that tend to not consist of any protein. Most food sold is consisting of a lot of carbs and sugar. Also, an example of the espresso drinks that are available, which have less caffeine than filtered coffee, therefore I suffered from many caffeine headaches while abroad.
