Italy: The Science Behind Art

Submitted by Jacob Verbanas on the 2017 winter session program in Italy sponsored by the Department of Art…

On Thursday, we took a day trip to a foundry in Pietrasanta.  It was really interesting because we got to see how statues were made.  A lot of time, energy and thought goes into this process. Our guide, Maria, was an Italian sculptor who gave us a step by step explanation.  It inspired me to try and make my own sculptures.  Surprisingly, a lot of engineering goes into art.  Knowing what material to use in each step.  Knowing how molten bronze will flow into the space needed to create the statue has to do with what I am learning in my classes back at UD.  I am starting to see more and more connections to my major to art on this program.  Each one more inspiring then the last.
