Workshop Objectives

This workshop series will help students to:

  • Choose a university in the USA
  • Learn tips to writing a good Admissions Essay or Statement of Purpose
  • Better understand the questions that they will see on Mathematics Exams (such as the UD Math Placement Exam, GRE, or GMAT)

Ultimately, the goal is for students to complete the entire application process by December 6th! This will meet the admissions deadlines for many American universities.

This series is being offered to all ELI students free of charge.

Workshop Details

Each workshop has a specific theme (see details in the images below). Students must come prepared! They will be required to bring special materials to several of the workshops.

Workshop#1: Admissions Overview

Learn how to choose a university in the USA, considering such things as:

  • Program details
  • Rankings
  • University size and location

When students finish this workshop, they will be expected to choose at least one American university and begin the application process.

Details:

  • Friday, November 8th, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
  • Location: SALC
  • Organized by: Erin Bastien Solorzano (ebas@udel.edu)

Workshop #2: Write your Essay or Statement of Purpose

At this workshop, students will learn important tips for writing their Admissions Essay and/or Statement of Purpose.

All students who attend this workshop should have already begun completing applications for at least one American university.

Students must bring the following documents to this workshop:

  • The “Prompt” (the question that they are expected to answer in their Admissions Essay or Statement of Purpose) for the university to which they are applying
  • A first draft of their Admissions Essay or Statement of Purpose (or notes of the points that they want to cover in their composition)

When students finish this workshop, they will be expected to finish writing their Admission Essay or Statement of Purpose within 2 weeks (before December 6th).

Details:

  • Friday, November 22nd, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
  • Location: SALC
  • Organized by: Emily Thayer (ethayer@udel.edu)

Workshop #3: English Math Terms for Understanding Tests

This is a special workshop that will help students to perform better on Mathematics exams, such as:

  • The UD Math Placement Exam (for undergraduates who will attend UD)
  • GMAT (Math section)
  • GRE (Math section)

In this workshop, students will build a better understanding of the questions that are asked on the exams–so that they understand which mathematical operation is required for the test question.

Details:

  • Friday, November 22nd, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
  • Location: 108 East Main Street, Room #225
  • Organized by: Julie Lopez

Workshop #4: Apply Now!

In this workshop, students will finally click SUBMIT–they will finish their application and send it to the university!

This workshop will be student-led: every student who attends will be able to ask his/her final questions about the application or admissions process so that he/she can submit the application!

All students are required to bring all of their application materials to this workshop.

We will help the students with everything:

  • Explaining any question on the application that is still confusing the student;
  • Giving one last look to the Admissions Essay and/or Statement of Purpose;
  • Making sure that the application is submitted properly;
  • Helping the student to submit all required documents for the application–even helping them to set up an express mail shipment, if necessary!

No question is a stupid question.

Our goal is simple: On this day, our students will submit their application!

Details:

  • Friday, December 6th, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
  • Location: SALC
  • Organized by: Michael Alexo
