The UD ARO Lab conducts research with stroke survivors with communication impairments (aphasia and/or motor-speech difficulties) and SLPs.
Please see the RESEARCH page to learn more about current research studies or complete this form and we will contact you with information soon.
How do I participate in research?
Most of our research is with adults with mild, moderate, and severe communication impairments. We provide individualized communication support throughout our research activities.
Our current research studies are conducted online (Zoom). You may use your computer or tablet to participant. We work with individuals across the U.S.
Before you decide to start any research study, you will learn about the purpose of the research and all study activities. We will also ask questions to see if you are a fit for the research. For example, we ask stroke survivors questions such as their stroke date(s), primary language used, years of education, and if you have any other neurological impairment (other than stroke).
If you decide to participate and you are a good fit for the research study, we will start with a process called Informed Consent. We will use an Informed Consent Form to explain all parts of the study, any related risks and/or benefits, and how we will keep your personal information (including your name, health, and contact information) private and securely protected. After we have answered your questions, you can sign the form to say you agree to participate. You may decide to stop participation at any time and for any reason.
Research participants often attend 2-4 appointments (about 1.5-2 hours long) to take tests of language and thinking, and complete questionnaires about stress, coping, and life participation. Sometimes we also ask a few interview questions. All research activities are provided with communication support tailored to the individual.
Most of our current research sessions take place online (using Zoom) but if you live near the University of Delaware, you can choose to come to UD STAR Campus. If you live in the surrounding region (including the Philadelphia area), we may be able to come to you.
