John D’Arcy: Building a security culture

darcyFor this episode of Campus Voices host Richard Gordon was joined by UD Associate Professor of Management Information Systems John D’Arcy. D’Arcy appeared on the show today because October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, and his research interests are in information assurance and security, IT risk management, and computer ethics.

D’Arcy indicated that firewalls and other technical controls are only the beginning of implementing cyber security. He studies the “human factor,” analyzing how people interact with technologies and how they react to security policies. Like many security experts, D’Arcy says that us humans are the weakest link in the cyber security chain.
People need a strong reason to add an extra security task to their work routine. D’Arcy has found that people are more likely to become security conscious when the need for security is made personally relevant to each member of a community (employee, student, client, customer, etc.).

D’Arcy talked about the ways University community members can protect themselves from scams like email phishing. He explained the importance of two-factor authentication (2FA) in making it more difficult for a hacker to use stolen credentials. 2FA will be mandatory for all students by the end of 2017 and is a big part of the Secure UD Initiative to educate the community about the importance of protecting their own confidential information and personal or University information in their care.

That’s the first step towards building a work culture that values security.
