Fax Phishing Alert

Alert sent by Academic Partnerships to a member of the UD community.

We received an alert that Academic Partnerships, a company that works with some members of the University, was exposed to a virus that affected some of its mail servers. As a result, phishers used those servers to send fake fax notifications to some of Academic Partnership’s email lists.

These fake notifications claim to be faxes from Epson fax machines, and the “fax” itself is supposed to be represented by an attachment. The attachment is actually a virus that executes when opened.

This particular phish is similar to other fake notifications we’ve seen recently. It’s also similar to some scams we saw several years ago.

If you see such an email in your inbox, delete it. Don’t open the email or the attachment.
