Classification of the Issidae

The classification of Issidae is fundamentally based on groupings proposed by Melichar (1906, Monographie der Issiden). General features used (as noted by Fennah 1954) were general body form, relative size of tegmina, presence or absence of a claval suture, and occurrence of foliate protibiae in the male, divided the family into the Caliscelinae, Hemisphaeriinae and Issinae (Melichar used the family level -idae, but presumably intended as subfamilies). The Issidae were divided (based on degree of wing development) into the Hysteropterini, Issini and Thioniini (Melichar used -inae).  In addition to these taxa, the Ahomocnemiellinae were described by Kuznetzov (1929). Baker (1915 : 141) proposed Augilinae for Augila Stal and Augilina Melichar, but Augila was subsequently moved to Lophopidae by Muir (1930: 476).

Fennah (1954) treated Issidae in an expansive way, including with it the Acanaloniidae and describing the subfamily Trienopinae.  Metcalf (1958) followed Fennah (1954) as follows (without comment), except treating Acanaloniidae as a family (Metcalf also treated Ahomocnemiellinae  as a tribe, although I do not see where Fennah advocated this; Fennah (1954) treated this grouping as a synonym of Caliscelinae).

Fennah (1954, followed by Metcalf 1958) recognized 5 subfamilies,  Caliscelinae, Issinae, Acanaloniinae, Tonginae and Trienopinae, which he defined as follows :

Tegmina with basal cell moderately distinct, costal vein distinctly submarginal. Ovipositor with third valvulae minutely denticulate along distal dorsal margin, upper apical margin, and to a slight extent even on external dorsal surface. Aedeagus with a pair of prominent lobes dorsolaterally at base.

Post-tibiae almost invariably laterally unarmed, basal metatarsal joint with more than two spines apically. Tegulae narrow, more or less concealed. Tegmina with basal cell usually clearly demarcated, costal vein normally at margin throughout, or margin thickened and flanged below, venation irregularly reticulate. Ovipositor with third valvulae either relatively large, securiform, laterally compressed, with apical margins minutely denticulate along inner surface, or subquadrate with apical margins smooth. Subsequent work after Fennah (1954) has removed taxa from the Issidae, which is now treated in a much more restrictive way.  Fennah (1987) transferred the Augilinae back into the Issidae as a tribe (Augilini) of Caliscelinae, and moved his subtribe Gaetuliina into the Nogodinidae as well as a couple of issid genera into his nogodinid tribe Mithymnini.

Emeljanov (1999) revised the issid higher classification based on the from of the ovipositor; viz., he defined Caliscelidae as a family (as a family with a “round ovipositor”), and restored Acanaloniidae (including Tonginae and Trienopinae) as a family (with a laterally compressed type ovipositor) (Tonginae is subsequently transferred to the Nogodinidae, and Trienopinae to the Tropiduchidae by Gnezdilov (2007: 293)).  Issidae was defined as having “pterygomonomorphism”, having “case-shaped or steeply tectiform tegmina” and “In Issidae, the styles have a peculiar head of dorsal process with apical and lateral teeth” (by which I think he is referring to the ovipositor).  If I understand his key properly, the steps to Issidae are “Ovipositor rounded (rounded type), or broad and convex at base but with slightly attenuate and compressed apices of the lateral lobes of third valvules which are always edentate (attenuate round type)” and “Coryphe with simple median keel and punctate apical callus; if median keel visible, it extends to apex of metope. Moderately brachypterous, fore wings monomorphic, coriaceous, convex, nearly always completely covering abdomen”.  With the removal of Acanaloniidae and Caliselidae as defined by Emeljanov, Issidae includes (based on Fennah’s groups), the Hemisphaeriinae and Issinae.

In 1991, the tribe Parahiraciini Cheng & Yang, 1991 was defined for a collection of east Asian genera.

Subsequently, Gnezdilov began a systematic study of the Issidae, ultimately defining the group narrowly, transferring many taxa of doubtful affinities out of the Issidae and revising the higher classifications – status and composition – several times, beginning most substantially with a review of features of the ovipositor in Gnezdilov (2003b).  Gnezdilov (2003a) defined the Colpopterini, which he later (2012: 757) transferred to the Nogodinidae (separately Tonginae was moved to the Nogodinidae and Trienopinae  to the Tropoduchidae) .  The Adenissini Dlabola, 1980 was placed into the Caliscelidae (Gnezdilov, 2003, 2013d; Gnezdilov and Wilson, 2006) and some genera and species previously listed within Issidae (by Metcalf, 1958) were transferred to the families Tropiduchidae, Nogodinidae, and Ricaniidae (Gnezdilov, 2007, 2009a, 2009b, 2012a, 2013b; Stroiński et al., 2011). Thus, the scope of the family Issidae s. str. was reduced to three tribes: Issini Spinola, 1839; Hemisphaeriini Melichar, 1906; Parahiraciini Cheng and Yang, 1991, included into the nominotypical subfamily (Gnezdilov 2013a, see also Gnezdilov et al. 2014). Gnezdilov (2013a) also subsumed the Thioniini under the Issini.

All of the work noted so far has been non-quantitative.  Early quantitative work that includes the Issidae mostly concerned family-level groupings, such as Yeh et al. (2005) that used 16S to reconstruct fulgoroid phylogeny.  Given the limited data, if is unsurprising that their results were not entirely compelling, but – for Issidae – they supported the general notion that Issidae as defined by Fennah was polyphyletic, and supported Emeljanov’s (1999) contention that caliselids and tongines were not Issidae s.s., but, anomalously, their results suggested that the Hemisphaeriini (a grouping that was misspelled in several ways in the figures) did not group with the Issinae; the former result was subsequently supported, but not the latter.

The first substantive quantitative phylogenetic investigation of Issid phylogeny was Gnezdilov et al. (2015) who sequenced portions of 4 gene loci (COI, 28S [D4D5 and 28SD6], and 18S for 32 (COI), 29 (18S) and 30 (28S) species out of 36 species (29 genera) of the families Issidae, Caliscelidae, Tropiduchidae, Nogodinidae, Ricaniidae, Dictyopharidae, Flatidae and Aphrophoridae.  The resultant phylogenies (below) showed low support but monophyly of Western Palaearctic issid genera and Caliscelidae seems supported.  Several  problematic groups remained unplaced (e.g., Lollius, Colpoptera, Bladina).

Subsequently, Wang et al. (2016) produced a far more robust phylogeny using 18S, two parts of 28S, COXI and Cytb genes from 50 genera and 79 ingroup species (including 8 species recently excluded from Issidae) using both Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses.  In the results, all analyses depict several fully supported lineages, challenging recent classifications of the family (and for the first time imposing some order on issid classification).  Their results support the exclusion of Caliscelidae, Acanaloniidae, Tonginae, and Trienopinae from Issidae.  They present a strong coherence between lineages and geographical distribution and a new classification with 3 subfamilies and 7 tribes. They reestablished Thioniinae (Thioniini) as the New World Issidae were independent lineage sister to all other Issidae. Palaearctic Issidae were weakly supported as monophyletic. Issinae includes 2 tribes: Issini (Issus and Latissus) and Hysteropterini (all other Palaearctic genera). Oriental Issidae form a monophyletic subfamily Hemisphaeriinae with 4 tribes, the first 2 of which are described as new : Kodaianellini (nov.), Sarimini (nov.), Parahiraciini and Hemisphaeriini [with subtribes Mongolianina (nov.), and Hemisphaeriina]).  The New World Picumna is provisionally placed in incertae sedis within the Hemisphaeriinae, and a collection of New World genera remain unplaced within the Issidae.

Recently, Gnezdilov (2018) has begun to move distinctive Thionia into new genera, Describing Fowlerium and Aplos for North American species removed from Thionia.
