Agronomic Insect Scouting

Alfalfa
Scout any alfalfa less than 12 inches tall for potato leafhopper. It is more active this year than last year.

Soybean
Ben and I produced a short video scouting R2 soybean at the research station. It is now posted and discusses fungicides, insecticide/fungicide tank mixes, stink bugs, defoliators and Dectes stem borer. Take a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NObLkHQvtM8&ab_channel=UDCANRCooperativeExtension. Many thanks to Delaware Soybean Board for their support; we will be filming regular soybean scouting videos.

In general, defoliator activity is fairly minor. Thresholds for full season beans are 20%. If a field has green stink bugs in it prior to pod formation, those stink bugs will be around for pod set. Scout for stink bugs paying special attention to areas near woodlines and tax ditches. If you have a near threshold of green stink bugs along wooded areas, scout about 150 feet in from the edge. We have often seen heavy stink bug populations stay confined to field edges, such that you may only need to do an edge treatment.
