Respirator Fit Test Training Workshop

Thursday, November 9, 2017     9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Carvel Research and Education Center

Georgetown, DE 19947

As part of new changes to the Worker Protection Standards that became effective in January 2017, anyone who applies a pesticide that lists respirator protection as part of the required personal protective equipment must successfully complete a medical evaluation and a respiratory fit test every year. This new requirement follows OSHA guidelines required for respiratory fit testing. The University of Delaware Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP) is partnering with the North Carolina Agromedicine Program to offer a Medical Evaluation/Respiratory Fit Test workshop that will help growers comply with this change to the WPS.

Support from grant funds will reduce the cost of the workshop from $150 to only $25 per participant. In addition to leaning how to conduct the required fit testing for employees on site, instead of finding a location that provides fit testing, participants can have their own respirator fit tested as part of the hands on activities during the workshop. However, to have this fit testing done, participants must bring proof of the required recent successful medical evaluation.

Most of the four-hour workshop will be hands on interactive demonstrations of how to conduct the required fit testing for employees on-site at your operation. This will not only help growers meet the regulatory requirement, but it will save time and money for employers and their employees.

Additional information is provided here.

Workshop participation is limited to 20 people and you must pre-register. Please plan to pay the registration fee at the meeting. To register please contact Kerry Richards by email (pesticidesafety@udel.edu) or phone: (814) 880-0013.

When registering please provide your name, mailing address, email and phone number and answer the following questions:

  • What pesticides do you apply that require respirator protection? (This information will only be used to select pesticide labels to use as part of the workshop)
  • Will you have your respirator fit tested as part of your participation in the workshop?
  • Do you have a current medical evaluation? If not, we can help complete that process.
  • Do you want to participate in the blood pressure, blood sugar and lung function screenings that will be available free of charge as part of the workshop?
