Club News: May 2024

Seaford Blue Jays – Jayda Genshaw, Reporter
The Seaford Blue Jays met on April 10, at the American Legion in Seaford. President Janet brought the meeting to order and our song leaders, the Means’, led us in a partner song. The Junior Leaders meeting was discussed and more information about the spring formal was noted. 80 people are attending the event. The Means talked about being CPR certified and trained on internet safety. They encouraged those in the age group to attend the younger members weekend which is going to have a music theme. Raina and Cora attended the Fair Fest and they learned a lot of information, received a folder of facts, and made a paper star craft. Janet reminded the club about the upcoming paper clover campaign at Tractor Supply. Our club is not going to be able to visit the Cape May Zoo since they have stopped running shuttles from the ferry to the zoo during the month we would have gone. We might look into a trip to Dover Air-force Base instead. On June 8th we plan on meeting to plant our club flower boxes that are placed at the Lofland Park for the residents to enjoy.  Members take weeks during the summer to water and tend them. The Callaway’s are hosting a pool party at their home on June 15 for all members. The highlight was the Guest Speakers from the Wild Clovers Club. They taught us many interesting facts about the sunflower 🌻 and then instructed us on planting one to grow at home. They also shared information about their club and encouraged us to participate. They are planning a camping trip in the late spring that sounds fun. Big shout out of thanks to them for teaching us about the sunflower and sharing their club activities with us. Before leaving we shared a snack provided by the Callaway/Shultie family.

Sunset Branch 4-H Club – Ethan Perry, Reporter
In the April meeting we had a craft, a guest speaker and we played a game. As we do in every meeting, we opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and the 4H pledge lead by members of our club.  We discussed any new business as well as upcoming activities for our club as well as county and state 4H.  After we closed the business meeting, and while we were waiting for the guests to set up, we walked around the building and played Simon says. Next, we went back in the building to the guest speakers from the Outdoors club and we did a hands-on science project about marine pollution, in which we filled basins of water with various pollutants to see the effect of pollution on marine life. Finally, we made a tractor out of popsicle sticks and buttons.

Spring is a wonderful season for 4-H! We started off our April meeting by doing our pledges and hearing the treasurer’s report. For our old business, we planted beach grass on March 16. Archery in the county has also started back up! State Fair entries also opened on April 1. April 13 was also the Semi Formal for ages 13 to 19. As for our new business, wood science and Photography judging contest is April 17 at Carvel from 4pm to 7pm. Entries for the Equine Art contest are also due by April 19. May 18 is also Hollymount’s Animal Science Day! Apart from our old and new business, we propagated a spider plant for the State Fair! We also did an exercise in finding out if we were left or right brain dominate, and designed posters for the fair! All in all, it was a fantastic and fun meeting. Our next meeting will be May 9!
