Dr. Matthew L. Cohen

Dr. Cohen is a clinical neuropsychologist, which means that he is a clinical psychologist who specializes in the assessment of cognition, emotion, and behavior, particularly in the context of neurological conditions. 

He earned a Ph.D. at the University of Florida and received advanced training in clinical neuropsychology from the Baltimore VA Medical Center and The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. 

In 2015, he returned to the University of Delaware (his alma mater) to complete a research fellowship in rehabilitation outcomes measurement with UD’s Center for Health Assessment Research and Translation (CHART), and he remains an active member of the center. In 2016, he joined the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.  

Dr. Cohen conducts research in two areas. First, the assessment of cognitive function in adults, particularly cognitive functions that support communication. Second, Dr. Cohen is interested in the assessment of health outcomes that are subjective and personal to the patient (like quality of life). Dr. Cohen specializes in the creation and modification of health questionnaires (also called patient-reported outcomes measures) to benefit adults with cognitive and language disorders.

Dr. Alyssa M. Lanzi, CCC-SLP

Dr. Lanzi is an academic speech-language pathologist and has dedicated her clinical research career to helping rehabilitation health professionals treat functional cognitive deficits that result from Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders (ADRD). She earned a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of South Florida and received advanced clinical training specializing in cognitive rehabilitation and person-centered care. In 2019, she joined the Measure What Matters Lab at the University of Delaware to complete a research postdoctoral fellowship in applied cognitive assessment and rehabilitation with Dr. Cohen. In 2020, she joined the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders as a Research Assistant Professor and is currently the PI of a 5-year K23 career development award from the National Institute on Aging. 

Dr. Lanzi conducts research in two main areas. First, she is a clinical trial interventionist, who focuses on investigating behavioral treatments of cognitive function in adults at risk for ADRD. Second, Dr. Lanzi is interested in improving treatment-driven assessment, particularly with assessments of compensation during applied cognitive tasks, assessments of health outcomes, and assessments of discourse.

Anna Saylor, M.S., CCC-SLP

Anna is a speech-language pathologist after having earned her M.S. at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA in 2020. At Duquesne, she completed her Master’s thesis on modified medication instructions to improve comprehension in people with and without neurogenic language disorders.

After completing her clinical fellowship in North Carolina, Anna moved to Delaware to join the RECALL lab as a research speech-language pathologist. Currently, she is a doctoral student in the lab and interested in pursuing research related to functional assessment and treatment outcomes for people with cognitive communication disorders and their caregivers.

Faith Stagge, M.A., CCC-SLP

Faith is a speech-language pathologist with experience working with adults across the continuum of care from acute care to home health. She earned her M.A. at Saint Louis University in 2018, where she completed a master’s thesis revolving around the assessment of those with acquired motor speech disorders utilizing the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) framework. Her clinical passions have led her to pursue her doctoral studies under the mentorship of Dr. Matthew Cohen and Dr. Alyssa Lanzi. Her current research interests concern functional assessment and treatment of those with cognitive communication disorders.

Allyson Lindsay Johnson, CCC-SLP

Allyson is a speech-language pathologist with experience working across the continuum of medical speech pathology. She has experience working in multiple Veterans Administration hospital systems. During her time at the VA, she practiced in acute, inpatient, and outpatient settings in both face-to-face and teletherapy modalities. She earned her M.S. from the University of South Florida in 2020. During her graduate studies, she completed an optional master’s thesis on “Enhancing Intergenerational Conversations using visual cues: Effects of a Historical Timeline.” Allyson completed her clinical fellowship at the Minneapolis VA polytrauma center of care and went on to practice full-time in the VA system. She has joined the RECALL Lab due to her interests in implementation science, bridging the gap between clinical and academic settings, as well as her passion for evidence-based practice for those with cognitive-communication disorders.
