“Is it better to study what you love or what you think will get you a job?”

In today’s society, one of the main issues that people deal with is their careers and/or jobs. While growing up, every child has a dream, whether it is to become a doctor, an astronaut, or maybe even a professional athlete. Those “dreams” are engraved into our minds, and society makes us believe that we can peruse any dream and you can become anything you want to become [as long as you put your mind to it]. However, as we begin to age, our minds begin to shift focus. Is it really possible for me to become whatever I want in life? Will I be able to provide for myself and my future family if I really do what I want career wise? Unfortunately, the answer in most cases is no.

In the video “What If Money Was No Object?,”    one point that was made was “it is better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing, than a long life that is spent in a miserable way.” I completely agree with this statement 100%, but is it really possible to do this? In my opinion, when determining what to do with your future, it is important to find a balance between doing what you love and actually being able to make a reasonable amount of money while doing it. As we mature, it is important to accept the fact that we will have responsibilities to take care of; in most cases, caring for these responsibilities requires money. It would be very unreasonable to choose a job where you do what you love on a daily basis, but at the end of the week doesn’t leave you with enough cash to care for yourself [and/or possible family]. In this case, the best route to take is to choose a job that you enjoy enough, while making a sufficient amount of cash. Doing what you may not necessarily like doing.. just to make an income is a sad reality in our society. Agree with me or not, but money is important.

Although it may not be possible to pursue your favorite hobbies as a career, there is always the opportunity to participate in your favorite activities during your spare time throughout the week. We may not always have our way in society, however, there is always an alternative way to enjoy doing the things you love most.

  1. A very realistic take on this topic, I agree that money is important and it is always up to the individual to know what is best for them. Ultimately, I feel that every individual does know what’s best for them, and even if its not long-term it’s still very sane, and okay to take things as they come without any preconceived goals or ambitions. I feel the issues come in when people are encouraged to worry or stress about what they WILL do, when in reality what’s most important is what one IS doing, and when whatever is being done is honored, and given one’s full attention, what WILL be done will take care of itself because it can only become what is being done immediately. We talk of the future and yet no one up to this point has ever experienced the future, so planning for the future in my opinion is important to an extent, but life must be lived, and it cannot be lived in the future, the future can only be thought about, and too many people miss out on living their lives as they are because their too busy thinking about what their lives could, or even worse “should” be. I feel that whatever is, is always okay and when starting from there one will know what to do and how to move forward, and succeed in whatever form that may take.

  2. I think that if you are really good at doing what ever it is that you like, you should go ahead and make it your profession. Stop thinking of the what ifs. You never know what will be the outcome until you go through it.
