The speaker at our 2022 Annual Dinner, Roger Lowenstein, wrote in the Wall Street Journal that Achorn “has written a provocative addition to the canon.” Achorn’s previous book, Every Drop of Blood: The Momentous Second Inauguration of Abraham Lincoln, also received critical success and was named an Amazon Book of the Month. He is the author of two baseball histories: Fifty-Nine in ’84: Old Hoss Radbourn, Barehanded Baseball and the Greatest Season a Pitcher Ever Had and The Summer of Beer and Whiskey: How Brewers, Barkeeps, Rowdies, Immigrants, and a Wild Pennant Fight Made Baseball America’s Game.
