AI for Writing and Learning: Opportunities and Challenges

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the way we interact with technology and the world around us. AI also has the ability to enhance our writing and learning experiences, while simultaneously calling into question ethical considerations and potential challenges. In this presentation, we will explore how to leverage AI for writing and learning purposes, while being mindful of the implications and limitations of AI-generated content.This interactive two-part presentation aims to explore the use of AI in these contexts, providing participants with the knowledge and tools to utilize AI effectively and ethically.

Part 1: AI-Enhanced Writing – Maintaining Authenticity in Academic Writing Objective: To demonstrate how AI, including tools like Perplexity and Google Bard, can enhance writing tasks without compromising individual creativity and expression. Key Topics: Strategies for integrating AI in writing, maintaining an authentic voice, ensuring accuracy, and assessing content relevance and quality.

Part 2: AI in Education – A Practical Approach to Enhanced Learning Objective: To explore the practical application of AI in educational settings, focusing on its role in reinforcing student learning.

Key Topics: Development of AI-powered study aids, facilitation of language learning through AI, creation of practice questions, and navigating the ethical landscape of AI-generated educational content.

Problem Based Learning and AI

Accessible Course Design

Accessibility is often overlooked but is extremely important in your course design. This session will help you learn easy (and quick) skills to make your online course more accessible for all learners. (Presentation will focus on why accessibility is important, and simple things that faculty can do in their Canvas site – headings, alt text, pdfs, etc.)

Making the Transition to iClicker Cloud

Introduction to Gradescope – A new tool pilot

The Gradescope pilot is available to all instructors for the 2023-2024 academic year to make grading of paper-based assignments, such as homework, quizzes, and exams, more efficient. The student or the instructor can scan the work for submission, and then you use a powerful grading rubric tool with an easy online interface that also allows for only-the-fly creation and feedback. You can also gain further insights into student performance using assignment statistics that are calculated at the question-level of your assignment. Come learn more!

Increasing Access and Reducing Costs: A Hands-on OER Workshop for Faculty

With the rising cost of online access codes to course materials or textbooks, the use of open educational resources (OER) can significantly increase student learning and success. This workshop will introduce faculty to OER repositories of peer reviewed course materials and simple strategies for incorporating them into your classes. Whether you have explored the open access movement before or are just starting out, this interactive workshop gives you practical tools and experience to reduce the cost of your course materials with these customizable, affordable resources. This workshop is intended for faculty members who are redesigning or will be redesigning a course in the near future, or those who have an interest in the topic will gain practical experience locating and identifying these materials. Faculty will also be introduced to library support for course affordability.
