In today’s digital age, everyone is buzzing about generative AI. Unless you are living under a rock, you would have used or at least heard people talking about it.  It’s has certainly become the latest craze, with people eagerly using it to generate text, images, and more. After all there’s a tool that can write text for you and do your writing tasks? Count me in! 

While the tools are becoming ever popular every day there is now a downside to it. As the volume of data generated is increasing, the quality has been witnessed as decreasing in many cases. Generative AI is being exploited to such an extent that now it is easily detectable. 

As people have saturated the usage by totally relying on AI to create content, we’re beginning to see a rise in generic writing peppered with repetitive keywords that do not just hint but scream “AI-generated.” Most of us have heard about those essays and articles starting with “As an AI language model,” as if the AI itself is making a formal introduction—a dead giveaway that an LLM was used. You do not want your professor or your boss reading that out to you! While AI offers incredible advantages, its overuse without understanding how to make it personal and be aligned with your thoughts will not lead to optimal results. That’s where prompt engineering comes into action.

What is Prompt Engineering?

By definition, prompt engineering is the art of crafting effective inputs for AI models. Think of it like giving directions to a highly intelligent, but somewhat literal, assistant. What you write or feed the AI model is your prompt. Do not be overwhelmed by the term “prompt engineering.” While it does reflect a technical and sophisticated vibe, it is nothing more than the process of giving commands to a language model or AI tools in gerenal. Once you realize the core of the matter, you will find it difficult to be impressed by many people using it as buzzword of LinkedIn and elsewhere. 

The main thing to understand is that generative AI models, like large language models (LLMs), thrive on context and data. The more precise and well-structured your prompts, the more accurate and relevant the AI’s responses will be. And this is where you can automatically train your model to constantly learn and evolve. With patience and extensive usage, you will see the results becoming more desirable as the model now has specific data points that you provided for extracting text. Let me mention here that users also have the option to let the LLM store or delete major data identifiers, which helps tailor interactions to provide personalized and relevant answers consistently. For instance, if you feel that you have provided information that you don’t want it to store such as your phone number or address, you may delete it from its memory.

By providing detailed and contextual prompts, you’re essentially feeding the AI with the right information to generate meaningful and personalized outputs. It’s like having a conversation with someone who understands you better each time you talk. Patience is key here—the more context you provide, the more personalized and relevant the AI’s response will be. For making it easier, here are four elements that will make it easy to get better responses.

Don’t be intimidated by the term “prompt engineering.” It’s not as complex as it sounds. Here are the basic elements:

  1. Clarity: Be clear and specific about what you want. Vague prompts lead to vague answers.
  2. Context: Provide relevant background information. The more context, the better the response.
  3. Constraints: Set boundaries if needed. This helps the AI stay on track and deliver more focused results.
  4. Iterative Process: Use feedback to refine your prompts. Adjusting and iterating your approach can lead to improved outcomes over time.

In the end, if we’re going to use a tool, why not use it properly? Understanding and leveraging prompt engineering can transform your interactions with generative AI from frustrating to fantastic. And since AI usage and penetration has skyrocketed, it is imperative that we learn to use the tools efficiently. So next time you fire up an AI tool, remember: it’s not just about what you ask, but how you ask it. With a little bit of prompt engineering, you’ll be amazed at the results you can achieve.
