Legal and healthcare readiness event brings connection, and care to the LGBTQ+ community

On Monday, Dec. 8, the University of Delaware’s Partnership for Healthy Communities (PHC) hosted Empowered Futures: LGBTQ+ Legal and Healthcare Readiness Day, a gathering rooted in support, belonging, and access.

Bringing together organizations across legal, health, advocacy, and community-based services, the event held at the University’s STAR campus aimed to create a welcoming space for Delaware’s LGBTQ+ adults to explore critical resources related to healthcare planning, legal rights, and whole-person well-being.

While the offerings were practical, what defined the day most was the intention and care behind every interaction.

For many LGBTQ+ community members, navigating legal systems, healthcare environments, and personal planning can be complex. Questions around relationship protections, insurance considerations, medical decision-making, and family structures are often front and center.

“This event reinforced that advancing health equity is not only about systems change,” said Katlyn Culhane-Suluai, PHC program manager. “It is also about relationship-building, cultural humility, and ensuring that people have trusted spaces where information is shared compassionately and clearly.”

The event worked to reduce barriers, increase access to guidance, and provide a space where people could seek information and support without hesitation. Participants connected directly with organizations offering expertise. Many attendees left with new contacts, referrals, clearer next steps, and a stronger understanding of available pathways for support. Partners offered their knowledge, presence, and willingness to engage deeply, creating an environment rooted in dignity, affirmation, and access.

“Legal readiness and health awareness are not solely administrative concepts,” said Culhane-Suluai. “They are closely tied to personal autonomy, empowered decision-making, and long-term well-being.”

PHC remains committed to continuing this work, strengthening access to resources, expanding awareness, and supporting initiatives that affirm LGBTQ+ lives across Delaware.
