The Partnership for Healthy Communities HEALTH (Health Engagement Access Learning Teaching Humanity) for All program (H4A) has been recognized as one of the 11 winners across the United States and Canada of the 2024 I Partner with My Public Library Award

The award highlights H4A’s collaboration with the Route 9 Library and Innovation Center in New Castle, Delaware, to improve access to holistic care and address health disparities in the community.

The partnership, established in 2022, has generated monthly health screenings by the H4A team, and a health fair in 2023, which brought 23 health-related organizations to nearly 200 visitors.

H4A Program Manager Christine Sowinski has facilitated additional partnerships between the University of Delaware and the Route 9 Library, including with Jessica Edwards, associate professor in the Department of English.

In 2022, Edwards’ professional writing students produced health literacy brochures and infographics in support of the library’s many community health and wellness efforts.

Another of Edwards’ writing classes proposed templates for memory kits to be distributed to individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia as part of a joint initiative between Delaware public libraries and the Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities (DSAAPD).

“It has been an honor working with the Rt. 9 Library,” said Sowinski. “One of our most memorable moments there was when both Epidemiology and English students were present on the same day, showcasing a perfect example of interprofessional learning.”

H4A, led by Sowinski and Heather M. Milea, clinical lead, provides tailored services and programs in neighborhoods, schools, places of worship, and work settings to promote and improve health, while providing hands-on experience for undergraduate and graduate students.

“Our ongoing partnership… is incredibly impactful and positive,” said Scott Businsky, adult services librarian at the Route 9 Library and Innovation Center.
