Heather Walling Doty

I am an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Delaware. I received my Ph.D. in physics from the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB).

Research

My primary research interest is equity and diversity in the academic science and engineering workforce. I am co-PI on the University of Delaware’s NSF ADVANCE IT grant, whose goal is to increase the participation and advancement of diverse faculty in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.

My background is in semiconductor physics. At UCSB I studied the Quantum Hall Effect in multilayered semiconductor systems, essentially a series of two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) stacked on top of each other. The images above show work I did on fractal-shaped mesas etched from a GaAs/AlGaAs superlattice structure. At UD I have worked with undergraduate researchers on computational models for electronic materials used in photovoltaic applications and the physics of roller coasters. Note: I do not supervise graduate research.
