A Runner’s Guide in Spain

Submitted by Megan Crowley on the 2016 summer session program in Salamanca, Spain sponsored by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures…

As a member of the Delaware Track and Field team, running is a major part of my life. It was my getaway, my favorite thing to do when I am stressed. I love that feeling when your legs are numb and you cannot catch your breath after your race. It does not seem very appealing, but it is the most rewarding feeling in the world.

In Spain, I was nervous I would not have the time to run everyday. Waking up early and going to bed extremely late makes it hard to run each day, but I still find time to do my favorite thing. After about a week of doing nothing, but drinking coffee and eating chocolate croissants, I decided to start running again along the bike trails. I was surprised that not many people in Spain workout or run because the day usually consists of miles of walking anyway! Salamanca, Spain is a walking city, and most people walk instead of drive, so running is not necessary for their daily activity. There are some gyms in Salamanca, but they are very spread out and small. Joining a gym was not an option for me, since they were all extremely far from my host apartment.

Personally, I run whenever I feel down, upset, stressed or even happy… it does not matter. It is the best way to clear your head from everything going on in your life. Recently, I started running about 4-5 miles a day along the river in Salamanca. The views are breathtaking, and by running, I have seen more than I would have ever expected. I know my way around Salamanca very well now, and feel confident when trying to find something in the city. Running has made me a better person, and I am glad I have time to incorporate my favorite activity into my life in Spain.

My advice to anyone in a new place or country is to run. It will help you get in shape, and will also allow you to find exciting new places to help you feel more secure in your new location! The best solution to any problem is to RUN! Run until you can’t anymore.
