Living History in Argentina

Submitted by Kathryn Russel on the 2016 winter session program in Argentina sponsored by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures..

During the dictatorship in Argentina in the 70’s, many people went missing. If the government suspected that someone was against them, they would capture the person, torture them and murder them. Many mothers lost their children to the government and never found out where they had gone. The mothers of “the disappeared” started to walk around Plaza de Mayo, a historical site in the city of Buenos Aires. They walked to protest against the government and their wrong-doings. Today, some of the grandmothers walk for their disappeared grandchildren every Thursday at 3 pm. I felt honored to witness such a historical event with such brave women taking part in it.
